The Red Dress
The December air smells like just-rained and there are lights in the dark shimmering trees bouncing off the wet asphalt street. She is dizzy, slightly dizzy, and she takes a few twirling steps as her red dress unfurls around her like a brilliant crimson flower, her face effused with light. He walks slightly behind her, watching her in all her lovely, half-drunk glory. Beside her, his dark suit fades into the night, but he doesn't mind, and neither does she. It's never been like this before; she had never laughed like this, stayed out late like this, worn clothes like this. She had never been this happy. He had given her a piece of the sun, that's what it felt like. It was coal black and all burnt out; she had put it in her heart and let it catch fire. She wasn't sure where he had found it or how long he'd had it in his pocket, but it kept her warm and everyone could tell that she had changed. And here was the way that she knew it would last: as much as he had loved her when her life was small and quiet and bleak and grayscale, the way he was looking at her now, the Christmas lights reflecting in his gleaming dark eyes and his lips curving into a gentle smile, made her sure that he loved her more now, when she was so brave and so happy. And then, the way pulled her closer, the way he kissed her there in the empty street, amid the shadows and the rain and the light- that definitely proved it.
