Auteur : Kristina
Sujet : The Vampire Diaries
Résumé : Based on the stills released of Klaus and Rebekah for episode 3.08. This is my take on it and I really can’t think of a different summary without giving it away.
Langue : Anglais

There was something entirely troubling to see her brother tremble before collapsing onto the ground. She could only watch with muted horror as the mud clung to his clothes ad embedded in his hair. Elijah stood at some distance, just watching, his face a cool, composed mask and she fought to hide the anger that flared within her. It was so easy to blame him, even when she knew it was not his fault. Not entirely. But she knew, oh, she knew exactly what caused the fall. And she found herself shooting a glare toward Elijah, who broke eye contact, his lips drawn in a tight line.
She hesitated, taking a tentative step forward before stalling again. How betrayed he must feel, she realized. And she had known. She had known everything and kept it from him, just as they all had. That is, until Elijah stepped in, unwilling to let his brother stumble about, ignorant to his situation any longer. He must not be able to stand the sight of any of them.
But he never did enjoy being alone for long.
“Niklaus,” she whispered as she grew near. His face was blank, his eyes wide and lips parted. “Nik?”
No response. She glanced toward Elijah again. He could have had a little more tact. Why tell him in such an open place?
“I-I am not,” he stumbled, the words getting caught in his throat. But he didn’t need to say it. She knew.
“It does not matter,” she stated, trying to soothe him in any way she could. But it was true. It didn’t matter. Not to her. “It doesn’t mean anything.”
“It means everything!” he roared, turning on her. His temper always was a fickle thing. But she would take his rage over the previous episode.
“Not to me,” she replied with the smallest of smiles. It didn’t seem to help any. Why would it? “It does not change a thing.”
“You all kept this from me,” he accused and his eyes were not quite focused on her own. His voice spiked near the end, giving the impression he was asking a question. But she knew better. “You lied to me.”
“No, Nik,” she sighed, her hand on his back. She felt the muscles tense and he turned away from her. He was staring at the ground again. “We never lied to you.”
“You did!” he shouted suddenly, causing her to flinch. “All of you.”
“We kept it from you,” she clarified, trying not to get upset with him. “And now you see why.”
“All this time…you treated me as an equal, as your brother.”
“You are my brother,” she replied vehemently. “How dare you suggest anything otherwise?”
“I am not his son!” he roared, standing suddenly, causing her to lose her balance momentarily. She could see the bits of mud along her dress.
For a moment she could see everything flash before her. She could see the words that would be whispered in hushed tones before eventually growing in volume every time her brother walked by. She could see Klaus saying them himself. The first one, the tame of the two, would be the first word to be used. It would be the word hissed back and forth to describe the situation. Illegitimate. But then there was the second word, and this word was what frightened her most because she could picture her brother in her head, snarling the word himself with an expression purely of hurt and abandonment. Bastard. She could hear the people in the village now, once the whispering fell away and everything else chose to rise, that would be the word they would use. It was the word more likely to sting.
“But you are my brother!” she lost her temper then. Her anger often matched his. They were so alike in some ways. Both so different from the calm demeanor Elijah often presented. Her jaw was clenched in defiance and she could see her older brother shaking his head as if he found the whole thing humorous.
“It is not the same, Rebekah!” his voice broke, tangled in his throat again. “I will lose everything.”
“You will not lose me,” her lips trembled, anger melting away as quickly as it came. She didn’t need to hear him repeat himself again. No, it wasn’t the same. His title would be stripped, everything he had known would be left to nothing. “He does not know.”
“Please spare me more of your lies,” he scowled.
“It is not a complete lite,” she bit her lip, fiddling with a string on her dress. “I do not know if he—”
“He knows, Rebekah. That is inevitable.”
“Then why does he not speak of it?” she found herself asking for it was a question that often did plague her mind.
“Perhaps he is involved in a ploy to end my life,” he joked harshly and she flinched.
“Niklaus,” it was a new voice that spoke and both of them turned to see Elijah approach. There was a solemn yet fearful expression on his face. “He’s coming.”
“As I said,” Klaus turned toward Rebekah now and she could imagine the horror he read in her own features.
“You need to run. He will be with us presently.”
Rebekah reached out just as Klaus turned to leave with their brother at his side. He turned, eyes unblinking and she could feel and see the water clouding her own. She could recognize the fear she felt. Fear was so simple to grasp. She clung to him until his hand found hers and she gripped it tight enough to cut off the blood flow. His expression softened just the slightest and she found herself in his arms. It was an embrace that felt very much like a goodbye.
“Run, Nik, you run until you feel safe again,” she whispered against his cheek. “I will not lose you.”
When he pulled away she could see that determination. There was a glint in his eyes and he did not smile, did not vocalize a single response. He tipped his head ever so slightly, a movement that she interpreted as a nod.
She was left standing in the mud, her shoes soaked through, knowing somehow that this would not be the last time she would see him.
    She would not allow it.
